This project focuses on creating a 10-second motion design piece inspired by the aesthetics and culture of the 1990s. The narrative follows an "up to no good" kid playing a classic doorbell prank and running away, leaving the homeowner puzzled. The animation emphasizes a nostalgic, playful mood and captures the charm of 90s life through distinct design elements.
This serves as a message to adults not to take things so seriously and see the positives in pranks.
Project Breakdown
Part 1: Concept Development
Task: Develop a concept, gather references, and create rough sketches for your motion design
project.
Goal: Establish a clear vision for the project, including style, themes, and storytelling elements.
Outcome: A concept document containing:
Written explanation of the concept.
Visual references (mood boards or inspiration).
Initial rough sketches or story ideas.
Part 2: Illustration Creation
Task: Design and illustrate all visual elements for your motion design piece.
Goal: Produce detailed, high-quality illustrations that match the 90s-inspired theme.
Requirements:
Illustrations must be layered in Photoshop or Illustrator files, ready for animation.
Maintain a consistent style throughout all assets.
Outcome: A set of finalized illustrations that include:
Characters (if applicable).
Backgrounds and environmental elements.
Any graphic or text elements needed for the animation.
Part 3: Storyboarding
Task: Expand on your concept with a full storyboard that outlines the flow of your animation.
Goal: Create a visual guide to plan the sequence, timing, and transitions of the animation.
Requirements:
Each frame should include descriptions of actions, effects, and movements.
Indicate timing and pacing clearly.
Outcome: A complete storyboard to serve as a blueprint for the animation process.
Part 4: Animation
Task: Animate the 10-second motion design project using Adobe After Effects.
Goal: Bring the concept and illustrations to life, ensuring smooth transitions, engaging motion,
and adherence to the storyboard.
Steps:
Import layered Photoshop or Illustrator files into After Effects (use "Composition - Retain Layer
Styles").
Apply principles of motion design, such as easing, timing, and anticipation.
Add effects, transitions, and text animations to enhance the overall piece.
Outcome: A fully-rendered 10-second motion design video.
Visual and Stylistic Direction
Theme: Nostalgic 90s aesthetic
retro graphics.
vintage-inspired effects (e.g., scanlines, glitches).
Typography: fonts reminiscent of the 90s cartoon era.
Imagery: 90s, animated shows.
Sound Design: nostalgic sound effects & fitting soundtrack to enhance the animation.

Reflection:
This project helped me refine my motion design skills, from conceptualization to animation. I gained experience in creating a cohesive visual narrative while exploring a nostalgic aesthetic. The process reinforced the importance of planning and attention to detail in delivering professional-quality work.
